WASHINGTON Antibiotics can temporarily upset your stomach, but now it turns out that repeatedly taking them can trigger long-lasting changes in all those good germs that live in your gut, raising questions about lingering ill effects.

The money raised by private, nonprofit organizations for medical research in the United States is but a tiny sliver of the overall funding picture. A 2007 report by Rand (pdf), a nonprofit research organization, placed that number at 3 percent.

Even so, these groups continue to sprout, not only to raise money, but also to raise awareness of the conditions and diseases they hope to eradicate.

Countless efforts, from huge national organizations to home-grown foundations that sponsor dinners and races, raise money for cancer research.

A senior UK doctor has warned that diagnostic errors are the central cause of avoidable harm to patients in hospitals. Gordon Caldwell, a consultant physician at Worthing Hospital in Western Sussex, argued that doctors need better facilities and sufficient time to make a correct diagnosis. When a patient is admitted to hospital, the team of doctors formulate a “working diagnosis,” he explained. At this point, the diagnosis is uncertain but the patient is treated as if the working diagnosis is correct. “If over the next few days the patient gets better, the working diagnosis is confirmed and becomes the diagnosis,” he said. This year’s Race for the Cure starts at 9 a.m. from a new location near Cleveland State University. The change is the third in 16 years.

Linda Campbell, former chairwoman of the Junior League of Cleveland, planned Cleveland’s initial race in 1994.

“The community was so positive about bringing the Race for the Cure to Cleveland,” she said.

TRENTON, N.J. Health giant Johnson & Johnson is donating about $200 million in cash and medicine to a sweeping United Nations program created to improve the health and lives of people in poor countries.

J&J is launching a five-year program called “Every Mother, Every Child,” meant to help almost 400 million women and children in developing countries. The maker of No More Tears Baby Shampoo will donate its medicine for treating intestinal worms in children, send pregnant women messages on prenatal health on their cell phones, and work to make childbirth safer.

The buzz around town is that Law and Order: Special Victims Unit star, Mariska Hargitay, is proud of her size 8 body. That translates to “I know I’m not skinny but I like my curves.” How dare she! 

Ms. Hargitay is a well-respected actress on a very popular television show. If she were a size 14, 16, 18,  then she would have the right to say she is proud of her curves.  She also doesn’t think she is beautiful although she was named by People Magazine as on of the 50 Most Beautiful People in 2005 and 2006.

Hargitay is the daughter of the sexy Jayne Mansfield and former Mr. Universe Mickey Hargitay.

YAOUNDE, Cameroon UNICEF says more than 300 people have died in the West African nation of Cameroon from the country’s worst cholera outbreak in 20 years.

UNICEF said Monday that more than 4,500 people have been sickened by the highly contagious infection that causes diarrhea in victims, leading to severe dehydration.

At least 331 people have died since the outbreak began in May, and officials fear it will spread further when children return to school this week after summer break.

UNICEF is launching an informational campaign in schools to teach children about good hygiene to prevent the disease from spreading.

Cholera also has killed several hundred people in Nigeria this year and more than 40 in the neighboring country of Chad.

Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, fiber and phytochemicals.

MyPyramid recommends that adults eat 1½ to 2 cups of fruits and 2½ to 3 cups of vegetables every day. Try to eat at least one good source of vitamin C daily, such as oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, guava, papayas, peppers, broccoli, potatoes and collard greens.

Also, try to eat at least one good source of vitamin A daily. A form of vitamin A (carotenoids) is found in red, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables and in many dark-green leafy vegetables. <
