Golf club wedge – there are 5 types of wedges played in a golf short game.
Golf club wedge played in a golf short game is designed for pinpoint accuracy and ultimate finesse. A short game is a shot within or around 100 yards from the green. A well designed golf club wedge and a good golf short game is a prerequisite to cutting strokes off your score.
Wedges played in a short game is a basic components of your golf club set, it produces more spin than any other club and this is due both to the greater degree of loft inherent in wedges, as well as the steeper nature of the swing used to produce most shots. Wedges are shorter and heavier than irons; this is to help control the swing at slow speeds and to promote a steeper angle of attack.
Confidence is a critical element in a short game because of the delicate nature of golf club wedge shots which can lead to a loss of distance control. With the right wedge, you can improve your scoring with practice of good technique.

- Pitching or a Pitch shot in a short game, is hitting the ball fairly high into the air with a golf club wedge, and letting it roll along the green to the hole. A Pitching Wedge or Sand Wedge is generally used for this shot.
A Dual/Gap Wedge helps players to manage their distances with shots that are too far for their Sand Wedge and too short for a full Pitching Wedge. The gap wedge also makes a handy sand club for longer sand shots and for use from the rough.
- Chipping in a short game involves hitting the ball a short distance in the air with a golf club wedge, and rolling it along the green all the way to the hole. Depending on the lie and a fairly unobstructed path to the hole, a club with fewer lofts can be played.
- Lobbing in a short game is a tricky one that requires much practice. It involves hitting the ball high in the air with a golf club wedge, in an attempt to land it close to the target and stopping it quickly. A Sand or Lob Wedge is used for this shot, and again, will require hours of practice to master.
- Bunker Shots in a golf short game refer to shots played from either a Sand or Grass Trap. For a sand shot, a player will use the Sand Wedge and allow the loft of the club to carry the ball out of the trap. Grass Traps are rare, but you will find them on occasion and a Lob or Sand Wedge should get you out of this type of trap. Keep in mind that both of these are hazards, so a player is not allowed to ground the club prior to the shot.
- Putting the ball effectively with a golf club wedge is one part of the game that requires lots of practice. Putting the ball involves moving the putter head back and then through in a pendulum swing motion that advances the ball towards the hole.
A Super-Lob/Extra-Lob Wedge in a short game is regarded as a "good player's golf club wedge” and it can be an effective for short bunker shots or from bunkers with very steep faces and high lips. This is the ultimate scoring wedge as its generous loft produces soft, floating, high, spinning shots that don't roll very much once they land on the green.
It has become popular these days for players to carry three or more golf club wedge as it allows the golfer to take a more confident full swing shots instead of having to make a partial swing with a stronger lofted club.
