Let’s never forget during and after The Biggest Loser that obesity has taken over as the number one killer. Two out of three Americans are obese.

In This first episode we saw how the contestants got chosen. We knew that Liz from Massachusetts is on the show; however, she was sent home last week. So what happened?  Well what do you know? Liz was one of a few who were saved by Bob and Jillian and are now on the show. That was the right thing to do. After noting in the last article that those most in need were at such a disadvantage, the show came through for those who may have also been disappointed. We can now officially follow Elizabeth and Brendon who had been an original contestant.

The Biggest Losers first training at the gym was scary for them. An incline of seven on a treadmill is hard. It is hard for those of us who workout every day.

Jillian pushes these newbies to the limit. By the way, vomiting or feeling really sick rigorous training is not abnormal; however, throwing up on the treadmill is a bit much. But their methods work and that is what counts.

The contestants used kettlebells. You saw one contestant doing what are called one armed rows with dumbbells. That is the hallmark exercise when it comes to working the back.

Liz, from MA, has asthma. Her tenacity is inspirational. She was told by the doctor that she would live to 62. She smokes, has high cholesterol and is morbidly obese.

In the kitchen Bob told the contestants that they have to eat to lose weight but what they eat has to be healthy and in healthy portions. Jillian talked about taking in calories and expending calories.

The second gym workout was called equal to medieval torture. The treadmills were put up to 10. The contestants were pushed to their limits, doing cable rows, dead lift and cardio like crazy. Bob spent considerable time with the very emotional Brendon and actually moved his legs on the stationary bike.  The contestants did a lot of interval training – the best kind of training because you are constantly challenging your body with different exercises, different paces, and different muscles.

Mark lost an amazing 41 pounds in two weeks. If you get discouraged hearing that because you’ve lost 2 pounds in the past month remember that these contestants have so much to lose. A lot of what comes off initially is water weight and just by eliminating the a giant sub a week they drop a lot of weight.

Rick lost 36 pounds and he fainted during the first workout! Allie lost 17 pounds; Ada lost 18 pounds; Jesse lost 30 pounds; Adam lost 34 pounds (not a complete list). Brendon from MA had to lose more than 25 pounds to be safe. He lost an amazing 31 pounds – gosh he worked for it. Elizabeth from MA had to lose more than 17 pounds. She only lost 12, which put her on the potential chopping block.

Will Liz stay to continue to lose weight and get healthy? There were seven on the chopping block. Who stayed depended on their funning skills. Liz made it!
