The news is in – Even if you are thin but have belly fat you are in trouble. This news came from a study just published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
The study was long and had enough people to make it scientifically valid. 100,000 Americans were followed over a seven-year period. They were over the age of 50. Those with the most belly fat were two times more likely to die than those with the least belly fat.
Eric Jacobs was the lead author of the study. Researches found that waist circumference did in fact predict whether participants were more or less likely to die.
You can measure your waist circumference by:
Putting a tape measure around your abdomen just above the hip bone. No cheating – sucking in that belly doesn’t count! Women with a waist circumference of 35 inches and men with a waist circumference of 40 inches or greater are at a higher risk of illnesses related to weight.
According to the study more than 50% of men and 70% of women aged 50 to 79 are over the cut-off and are high-risk. That is a lot of people! Are you one of them?
Start reading this Examiner’s articles to learn ways to get off the weight and keep it off (hint- diet and exercise).
