The Environmental Working Groups Shoppers Guide to Pesticides recently identified fruits and vegetables that have the highest and lowest pesticide residues. They listed their “Dirty Dozen” list, which are most likely to be contaminated with pesticide residues and should be bought organic:
- Apples
- Celery
- Strawberries
- Peaches
- Spinach
- Nectarines
- Grapes
- Sweet Bell Peppers
- Potatoes
- Blueberries
- Lettuce
- Kale/Collared Greens
When it comes to shopping for organic food in a supermarket, you have to trust that your grocers organic marked produce is actually grown without pesticides.
One-way to tell is simply by the way it looks. Fruits and vegetables that are organically grown do not have a perfect manufactured shape. They tend to have imperfections and become misshaped, which is a good sign that there are no added chemicals.
Another easy way is by reading the stickers. Most organic produce will be marked accordingly, and unfortunately also, marked-up in price.
The Dirty Dozen list may help you with going organic, but be sure to do your research. Just because a certain item claims to be organic doesnt mean it actually lacks pesticides and other harmful chemicals.
