Placebo treatments didnt improve an objective measure of asthmatics lung function. But they sure did make patients feel better.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine took 39 asthma patients and had them make 12 visits each to a medical facility, each time after having been off long-acting asthma medications for 24 hours. On each visit, a patient was randomly assigned to either a real albuterol inhaler, a placebo inhaler, sham acupuncture treatment, or no intervention.

A provocative commentary in one of the nation’s most distinguished medical journals argues yes, and its authors are joining a quiet chorus of advocates who say the government should be allowed to intervene in extreme cases.

A new research paper gives the clearest answer yet to a key question: how are people affected by gaining health insurance?

A study of people who got new Medicaid coverage shows that they received significantly more care, including preventive checks and hospital admissions, improved their financial situation, and felt better. Having Medicaid made a big difference in many dimensions, Amy Finkelstein, an MIT economics professor and lead author of the paper, tells the Health Blog.

The issue is more important than ever, with a huge new influx of Medicaid beneficiaries and other newly-covered people expected in 2014 due to the health-overhaul law.

Drug Study: A research review published by the Canadian Medical Association Journal finds that Pfizers anti-smoking drug Chantix is linked to a 72% increase in the risk of heart problems, the WSJ reports. A commentary authored by a physician who has received funding from Pfizer argues that a small drug-related risk is overshadowed by the cardiac benefits of smoking cessation.

Test Overuse: A study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology finds physicians are screening women for HPV more frequently than is advised by guidelines, including using the test in women under 30 along with a Pap smear, Reuters reports.
